The LOKRUM4YOU project is implemented by the Center UP2DATE in partnership with the Association A special friend from Dubrovnik and the public institution Reservat Lokrum, with financial support of the Ministry of Culture and Media in the amount of 100,000 kunas.
Through this project, tactile maps were created for 7 sights on Lokrum, models of animal species that live on Lokrum (bat, hawksbill turtle and peacock), we printed tactile postcards with the motif of Lokrum and an inscription in braille for blind people, a customized tourist tour of Lokrum was organized with trained tourist guides, which was attended by 30 people from Croatia, and a sign interpreter was hired for deaf people.
This type of adaptation is especially important for visually impaired people because they can finally experience the appearance of the sights of the cities they visit, to experience floor plans, shapes, facades, domes, towers, etc., to understand relations between the displayed elements, which are otherwise not available to them because size of the locality or observed object.
With this approach to cultural heritage, we additionally educate visually impaired people, we include them in the regular life of the community, we bring heritage closer to those to whom it is inaccessible, thereby influencing raising the level of their general culture, sense of belonging, we raise quality of life, we equalize opportunities, etc.
