Public Institution Lokrum Reserve in the International Project INTERREG HABI
The Public Institution Lokrum Reserve is a proud partner in the international project "INTERREG HABI" (Awareness raising, training, and scientific research activities on species and habitats of community interest), valued at 226,602.60 euros, which commenced on August 1, 2023, and is set to run until December 31, 2024. This project, co-financed by the European Union at a rate of 80%, represents a collaboration led by the partner Commune di Conversano, along with project partners Commune di Mola di Bari, Dubrovnik Development Agency DURA, and the Public Institution Lokrum Reserve, with budget of 60,600.19 euros.
The aim of the HABI project is to enhance the ecological and cultural aspects of cross-border regions, with a specific focus on areas within the NATURA 2000 ecological network. The project strives to strike a balance between human activity and the natural environment through strategies, workshops, and awareness campaigns. Various stakeholders, including the general public, the younger generation, small and medium-sized enterprises, and local authorities, will actively participate in the project. The project's objectives encompass the preservation of biological diversity, education, research, and the promotion of sustainable tourism, ultimately improving the quality of life in the local community.
The Public Institution Lokrum Reserve took part in the initial kick-off meeting held in Conversano on October 19 and will play an active role in the project by enhancing knowledge and data related to the NATURA 2000 habitat type, specifically the Posidonia seagrass meadows on the island of Lokrum. This will involve identifying threats and pressures on the habitat and species, as well as establishing the necessary protocols for monitoring in order to preserve this valuable ecosystem. Given that Posidonia seagrass meadows (P. oceanica) are identified as a priority habitat type for conservation under the Habitats Directive (Directive 92/43/EEC), the preservation of this habitat type is of great significance for the island of Lokrum.
The Interreg HABI project represents an exceptional opportunity to further enhance the preservation of the natural values of Lokrum Island. Through this collaboration, biodiversity conservation will be improved, public awareness about the importance of nature conservation will be raised, and the beauty of Lokrum will be safeguarded for future generations.
